Choosing the Perfect Lawn Mower - Bomgaars BLOG

Maintaining a lush, well- manicured lawn requires the right equipment, and selecting the perfect lawn mower is important. With various types features, and price ranges available, it's essential to understand your lawn's specific needs and your personal preferences before making a purchase.

Selecting the right mower deck size is crucial for ensuring efficient and effective lawn care. The mower deck size refers to the cutting width of the blades underneath the mower, which determines how much grass the mower can cut in a single pass. Once you assess your lawn the next step is to figure out what size mower deck you need. Knowing your lawn size is the primary factor to consider when selecting a mower deck size. If you have a smaller lawn, under half an acre, a mower deck between 30-42 inches may be sufficient. Larger lawns, those over half an acre, may reqiure a mower with a deck size 42 inches or larger. If you are not sure of the size of lawn you have you can pace off large rectangles counting your steps (an average man's stride is about 30 in. and an average woman's is about 26 in.). If you want a more accurate measurement, you can measure your own stride. An acre is 43,560 square feet, so a 1/4 of an acre is 10,890 square feet.

Once you decide the size of your lawn and what size mower deck you need look at the terrain and if there are any obstacles such as trees, flower beds, or slopes. These will all influence the type of mower that is best suited for your needs. Small to medium-sized lawns (typically under 1/4 acre), a push mower or battery-powered mower may suffice. Larger lawns might require a self- propelled or riding mower for efficiency. Lawns with slopes or uneven terrain, a mower with good traction and stability is essential. Self-propelled or all-wheel-drive mowers are ideal for challenging landscapes. Mowers with a smaller deck size are helpful when you have obstacles such as trees, flower beds or narrow passages.

Choosing the type of lawn mower is the next step in the journey.

  • Push mowers are available in gas powered and battery powered models. They typically have smaller deck sizes ranging from 20-23 in. suitable for smaller lawns (under 1/2 an acre) and can maneuver around obstacles.
    • Gas push mowers require regular maintenance and fueling but provide great cutting capability.
    • Battery powered mowers are quieter and more environmentally friendly than gas mowers.
    • Self-Propelled mowers feature a drive system that propels the mower forward, reducing the effort required by the operator. They are suitable for larger lawns or uneven terrain.
  • Riding mowers and Zero-Turn mowers are designed for larger lawns (over 1/2 an acre). They allow you to sit and steer while mowing. Riding mowers offer power and efficiency but require more storage space and maintenance. They offer a larger deck size ranging from 42 to 60 inches or more, ideal for covering larger areas quickly. Mowers with a deck size 36 to 54 inches are ideal for 1- acres. If you lawn is 4 acres or more it is suggested to use a zero-turn mower with a 60 inch or larger deck width.

The third thing to conisider when purchasing a mower is how much time you are willing to dedicate to mowing your lawn and how quickly you want to get the job done.  The larger the mower deck size the more ground is covered in a single pass.  If you enjoy mowing and prefer a more leisurely pace, a smaller mower may be in your future. Also consider do you want to ride or walk behind the mower.  These are all personal preferences
